New Preference System for Duty Roster in Dutyman

There is a new preference system to allow you to choose your duty using the dutyman system for the winter period. You have been sent an email from dutyman but here are some supplementary instructions.

Start by checking your members profile in dutyman. Once logged in use the ‘Profile’ tab at the top of the page to amend your contact details and your optimum duty type as required.

Next choose up to 3 preferred dates.  Use the ‘New Duties’ tab to click on a date that you wish to be on duty. Under the green tick, you will then need to click your preferred duty type ie SOD or Galley (This should be the same as your optimum duty on your members page in dutyman). You can choose up to 3 duties in the winter period.

Choose dates to avoid (Optional). Under the same ‘New Duties’ tab, click on a date that you are not available for. You can then click the box next to the red cross. You can do this for up to 3 dates.

Don’t forget to click the ‘submit’ button in the bottom right hand corner before exiting to save your changes.

Do it now to avoid disappointment!

If you do not choose a preference, then you will simply be assigned a duty, so get bidding now!

I will publish the new duty rosters towards the end of July. You will still be able to arrange swaps through dutyman.

Any questions, email me at vice.commodore@wlsc.org.uk

Club Regatta & Commodore's Cup

The Club Regatta and Commodore’s Cup weekend is held in June and has events and activities to suit all ages and abilities.

If you are still in the early stages of learing to sail then the Saturday Regatta races are informal and full of encouragement to help you improve and have fun at the same time.

If you can get round a course then enter the Commodore’s Cup on Sunday. These race results have a personal handicap applied to the race times. This means that the regular series winners have to work a lot harder than normal even to finish in the middle of the fleet, so everyone has a good chance to win the trophy - at all levels of ability.

Schedule of events:

Saturday 3rd July:

1.30   Fun / Beginners race 1

3.30   Fun / Beginners race 2

5.00   Family relay race

5.30   Bring your own food to BBQ

Don’t be put off if you haven’t got a boat or have never done a race. We will get anyone who wants to sail out on the water. There are club boats and there are members who will be willing to share.

Sunday 4th July:    Commodores Cup

10.30 Commodores Cup 1

12.30 Commodores Cup 2

2.30   Commodores Cup 3

Personal handicaps will be applied (based upon previous results).

Includes gold fleet oppies.

The club boats are also available for any member wishing to sail them in the Commodores Cup racing too.

Any questions?

Then please contact Mark Smallwood

The Club Road Gate

The locking arrangement at the club gate has been improved making it much easier to get to the lock from both sides. The right gate now opens inwards.
Please ensure the red chain is wrapped around the vertical bar so that it is just slack (see photo) and not left with a big loop hanging down.

Family Picnic day, Monday May 31st

Bank Holiday Monday 31st May saw the start of the country’s second ever National Family Week. Here at Wraysbury, as our contribution to the Family Picnic events, it was a picnic and sailing special on Bank Holiday Monday.

WLSC members figure in Optimist squads

Congratulations to five of our young sailors.

Robert Baddeley (GBR 5803) and James Taylor (GBR 5857)  in the IOCA National Squad.

Jamie Webb (GBR 5742) and Jenny Smallwood (GBR 5611) in the IOCA Intermediate squad

Jonathan Baddeley (GBR 5798) in the Optimist South East Zone squad for 2009/10.

The fact that Wraysbury consistently gets young sailors into these training squads is testament to the excellent training and coaching delivered by parents and the Fleet Captains.

Well done all, and best wishes for a successful 2010 to all of you.

Did you know you can get your own WLSC polo shirt?

Ollie Cooper (WLSC) and Callum Ellis (Burghfield) crowned RS Feva European champions

RS Feva European championships, which finished on Lake Garda on Saturday ... not an easy event, with lightish winds until the last day, when thankfully it blew 20knots, and Ollie came through from lying 4th to win with a 1, 7, 5 on the last day after 14 races in a fleet of 80 boats. After discards all Ollie’s results were in single figures in a Gold fleet of 40 boats.
Robert Baddely and James Taylor, also both of WLSC finished a creditable 12th having succumbed to the stronger winds on the final day. They were running first when the cut into Silver and Gold fleets was made earlier in the week.

Follow this link for the Feva Association's report and detailed results.

Commodores Cup Weekend

Saturday 4th July was Regatta day with several families enjoying simple cruising and racing in the sunshine followed by a BBQ.

Sunday 5th was Commodore’s Cup day. The three race series was run using Personal Handicaps which means that the regularly successful sailors have to sail out of their skins to win (which they didn’t) and the playing field is levelled. As a result the normal run of events was turned on its head by this method and the first race was run by Stan Metcalfe, the Master of the Fleet. Unfortunately the effort must have drained him as he was not able to build on this magnisficent start and the overall winners were:

1st Gareth Mills
2nd Howard Edwards
3rd Mark Smallwood.

Many thanks to Mark for coming up with a handicapping schedule that meant the corrected elapsed times were very competitive and represented great racing.

Wraysbury at the Laser 4.7 European Championships

Huge congratulations to Ollie  Cooper and Chris Taylor. These young men have qualified to go to the Laser 4.7 European Championships in Helsinki in mid August. They are part of a team of 11 boys and 7 girls, and competition for places is really tough.

Not only that, but they have also been selected as part of the RYA Summer Squad for the Laser 4.7’s. This means that they will get excellent training and race practice to hone their undoubted skills.

Have a great summer, lads (and parents)..

AGM and Prize Giving

On Sunday 8th February the AGM started @ 14:00 after the day’s racing. Lots of things going on this year, check out the club’s calendar and come and join in!

What's a Development Plan?

Any club needs to satisfy the current members first and build a platform for
encouraging others to joins us so as to ensure a rosy future. We have
great facilities for family sailors, and a friendly atmosphere to go with it.
We would like more people to enjoy it. The club Development Plan is
directed to that end; to provide a basis on which we can attract funding to
help our efforts to spread the word about the enjoyment of sailing. We
would like to increase our training ability/ capacity as well.

Club boats

Is the reason you are not sailing regularly that you haven’t got a boat yet? Want to try some different ones before you decide which is for you? Members can use one of our club boats in return for a small fee to cover maintenance & insurance costs..

Experienced sailor? Want to help others?

If you are an experienced sailor who can possibly help on either of the sail training Sundays, (guaranteed gloriously sunny - I promise), please contact Roy Chaney asap.

We keep all members with email addresses up to date with current news and events. We send out at least one email each month. If you have not received one recently then use the inquiry page/ contact us form to let us know and we will find out why. The link is at the top of the page.

Smallwoods sweep the lake

Jenny, Dad Mark & Alex clean up on Boxing Day.
The traditional ‘pud shifter’ race on Boxing Day was sailed as usual. The weather was bright, if cold in the sunshine, but the Smallwoods took 1st, 2nd & 3rd places. Is this a first ever for a family?

The clubhouse has a fine view over the lake
