Laser fleet
The Laser fleet is the fastest growing fleet at Wraysbury Lake Sailing Club. With all rigs represented (Full, Radial, & 4.7), there is something for everyone. The range of rigs gives a simple progression from youth to adult with the only changes being the sail and lower mast section.
The Laser was designed in 1969 by Bruce Kirby with production starting in 1972. In excess of 180,000 boats have been built world wide. Its continued popularity must in part be attributed to the fact that it has been an Olympic class since 1996 with UK interested boosted by the success of Ben Ainslie in 2000. For 2008 the Laser Radial is to be the Olympic single handed class for women.
The Laser is a very simple boat requiring minimal maintenance and its strict “one-design” formula keeps costs down while providing a level playing field for all - it’s not unusual to see 20 year old boats beating 2 year olds.
At Wraysbury, all Lasers race against each other using the Portsmouth Yardstick (speed rating) handicap system.
