WLSC Working Party 27th February 2010

We had a very successful working party on Saturday the 27th February, despite a rather late reminder going out to members due to emails crossing holiday dates.  Undeterred by intermittent heavy rain, 10 volunteers turned out to carry out repairs and improvements to the clubhouse and grounds and to make new anchors to secure the pontoons and buoys in the lake.  Our achievements included:

• 6 new anchors to replace some that were damaged over the winter (we think the ice may have moved the buoys and cut the mooring lines!) and to improve the anchoring on the pontoons;
• A considerable amount of donated pea shingle was moved from the entrance to a temporary store;
• A lot of rubbish and accumulated soil was moved from the side of the clubhouse and this should prevent moisture soaking into the wooden walls leading to rot;
• Old loose putty was cleared from the windows of the clubhouse and the wood has been primed ready for new putty and painting - rain prevented us progressing this task as much as we would have liked;
• Partitions were built between the toilet/shower and changing room areas to allow us to comply with gas regulations and bring the gas heaters in the changing rooms back into use.

We also undertook an inspection of the clubhouse roof and this reveals a significant amount of work to be done this year to wind and weatherproof - but probably also substantial structural repair if the clubhouse is not going to degenerate due to damp and rot.  I will report more on this later.
The purpose of the working parties is not just to repair but also to improve and create a comfortable, relaxing and pleasant environment for members to enjoy and, hopefully, to help attract prospective new members to sign up.  If there is anything you think we should be doing or you want to do then please let me know and I will work it into the plans as best I can.

I have a list of tasks that I would like to complete this year and many of them do not require any special skills.  I am also compiling a list of tasks that some of the younger members of the club could undertake which they might enjoy doing and will provide an opportunity for them to feel they are contributing.
There was a spirit of team work and achievement; several people commented that the day was enjoyable and I certainly want to maintain that through subsequent working parties. The next working party is on 27th March and it would be great to see more members of all ages and skills coming to help.

I will send out a list of objectives (and further reminders! ) closer to the day.
